Wikimedia Foundation, Inc Mr I. M Shumba took over as headmaster at chegato high school between 1981 and 2000 when he resigned from the post to join politics. During this period Mr Shumba modernised the school by successfully mobilising funds to build several new hostels, a new complex housing biology, physics and chemistry laboratories, and several staff houses

Zimbabwe: Veteran Educationist Shumba Dies

7 December 2011

FORMER Deputy Minister of Education, Sport and Culture and Mwenezi legislator Cde Isaiah Masvayamwando Shumba, who died on Sunday in Masvingo, was yesterday buried at his farm in Rutenga.
The veteran educationist, who died at the age of 62, was declared a provincial liberation hero.
Zanu-PF Masvingo provincial chairman, Cde Lovemore Matuke, described the late Cde Shumba as a hardworking party cadre who tirelessly worked to ensure that Zanu-PF remained a formidable force in the entire Mwenezi district.
Cde Shumba was born on January 3, 1949 in Mwenezi district and attended Rushumbe Primary School and later on Musume Boarding Primary School in 1965.
He later went to Chegato High School from 1966 to 1969 before enrolling at Gweru Teachers' College for a Diploma in Education in 1970.
From 1977 to 1979, Cde Shumba studied for a Bachelor of Arts Degree at the University of Zimbabwe then Rhodesia.
He taught at Musume Secondary school and Chegato High School.
Cde Shumba entered active politics in the 1960s as a member of the Zapu Youth wing and worked with the likes of the late Zipra military supremo Alfred Nikita Mangena.
Cde Shumba later joined Zanu when it was formed in 1963 and helped in the recruitment of people to join the armed struggle in the Musume area.
He also actively took part in mobilising people to reject the 1971 Peace Commission.
After independence Cde Shumba continued to support Zanu PF and was elected as the Zanu PF provincial secretary for security in the 1990s.
He also served as the Acting Zanu PF Masvingo provincial chairman six years ago. Cde Shumba, who had served as the legislator for Mwenezi for two terms, stepped down in 2008 when Zanu-PF designated Mwenezi West for a female candidate.
He was provincial secretary for security in the main wing at the time of his death.

Newturn Maidza At Musume High School(I was a student there when he was on study leave) the students called him Accuracy. This was because of his insistence on accuracy in science exercises. At Chegato High(1981) he was known as Mutumwapavi after he read his poem of the same title on a certain prize giving day. From a humble background,he went on to become headboy at Musume Primary School and at Chegato High.He was headmaster,MP and Deputy Minister of Education. I.M.Shumba was a soft-spoken but very determined character. He was also an astute observer of human character. His legacy will continue to inspire all of us who have had the honour to interact with him in a variety of situations.May his soul rest in eternal peace!

Sibanengi Dube I met Isaiah Maswaya Mashayamwando Shumba is 1987 at Chegato High School when I enrolled for my secondary education. He came across to me as a strict headmaster with a passion for academic excellence. But I was however scared of him. I would hardly pass through the court-yard to avoid any encounter with him. I would not hesitate to change direction whenever I stumble upon him. I was convinced that he did not know my name, but was surprised when I accidentally met him at the entrance of Dorm four in 1989 a few days towards the closing date. He greeted me by my first name and surname. To my surprise he even remarked that my Academic Report shows improvement that semester. This is how close the man was to his students. Shumba gave us the impetus that is still keeping us afloat up to this day. He made us to believe that we are the best and nothing will stop anyone from Chagato to be on top of any situation. He led by example. He continued studying acquiring ‘chains of degrees.’ Typical of his I can do it attitude, he went on to snatch the parliamentary position on Mwenezi. As if that was not enough of an achievement, he became a deputy minister of education, a position he used to help hundreds of former Chegato Students to pursue their targets. Chegato High School produced the best ‘O’ level result in Zimbabwe when Osborne Vhevha scooped distinctions in all subjects he sat for. He was equally up for the task as well in sports. From the humble, dusty and rural environment of Chief Mposi area, Chegato High Soccer Team of 1987 bagged the prestigious National Chibhuku trophy at the back of the Prikisi.

Zhou Takavafira I knew him as a no nonsense man and even avoided him by going to Masase for my form 1 to 4. At 'A' Level' I still wanted to avoid Chegato because of him but accidentally I went to the school and for two years (1985-86) came face to face with him. My third day at Chegato I already found my self in his office after initial announcement at assemble that he found us drinking at Danga from an unusual big pot. Sure we had done it with Taurai Shumba and Afarashe Gambiza. When we were dead drunk Gambiza in school uniform had gone to look for transport and becoz he did not know the head had gone to Maswayamwando and indicated the trio wanted transport to Chegato. He then came to call me and Taurai only to come face to face with our head. Of course he gave us transport and on the morrow punishment. Shumba protected me from myself moreso because of the family where I came from. By the time I completed my 'A' I was better of at Chegato. I have no regrets for gong to Chegato and in my later years I even visited Mr Shumba at Chegato and at the Ministry of Education to thank him for molding me into what I am. Like it or not Isaiah Shumba is a national hero and I have conferred the hero status on him never mind what Zanu pf may think. Many passed through his hands and he enriched their academic expertise and molded their character. He was a nation builder and a character molder and converted Chegato into a powerful force to reckon with academically

Your love, sympathy and heart felt condolences lightened our burden. Conveyed in various ways, to those who sent sms & wrote on FB, we read it all, those who phoned we heard it, those who came we saw it, those who gave we received it, those who prayed we felt it. He served his generation and slept. Lets also serve God while we still have breath, coz we don't know when our time will come. 1. Chifarai M Dube:That first time l came across Mr Shumba l told myself that he was a stict person. Too me he was the father that l had away from home.Believe it or not he was my dad's classmate so my dad gave him authority to deal with me as he would he own kids. It worked out well and l am who l am today due to his contribution. When he was deputy Minister of Education he summoned me to his office and he advised his peers that l was a product of his and l was beeming from ear to ear. May his soul rest in peace. You have earned your rest sleep well our mentor.

  2. Ndugu was his nickname. he must have got it from during the liberation struggle. As a Headmaster he was very strict and harsh at times. he would never give u a second chance. he expelled me in 1998 when we were about to write our midyears and all my life things have never gone the way I want. As a politician and Member of Parliament for my rural home he was the best. Mushawi and Chihwe bridges were constructed. schools were electrified and Nikita high School and Maranda High School got A Level status. All the Shumbas in the education sector were left in positions of authority. His decision to relocate from Shayamabvudzi to Rutenga cost him his parliamentary seat and participation in the botched Dinyane meeting. RIP Swayas.

  3. i remember my first day at chegato..my old man by my side.. two schools expelled...laughing softly with an angled eye..the man looked at me and said..U got so much for world young man..Jambaya this school handidi ndururani..i shall make u a man if u listen and learn.. and YES till today the most soft spoken man ive ever seen..Svayaz as the name shall always resonate..i can honestly say im a better man and excellent in my acts becuase he taught me what it meant to be perfect and never to stop trying..its rare for a headmaster who calls into his office just to say hie..see thur ur report card before it got home and ask how im progressing.. little wonder i achieved a lot under his tenure.. sometimes u just had to look at him and ud know what leaderhsip and parenthood was about..HE was IT defined..chegato has and shall never be the same without this man.. and "this i bet u"..as dhongi would say...
